Welcome To Polar Innovation Week!

The final month of International Polar Year coincided with Youth Science Month (March 2009). Youth Science Canada saw this as a great opportunity to increase Canadian students’ awareness of the largely unfamiliar polar regions.

Youth Science Canada, in partnership with the Government of Canada International Polar Year Program, presented Polar Innovation Week, March 21-28, 2009. Middle and high school students across Canada were encouraged to increase their knowledge of the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Youth Science Canada continues to update this site to provide resources to Canadian educators and to engage students’ learning about the Poles. Certainly the body of scientific knowledge about the Arctic and Antarctic, which was advanced significantly through International Polar Year, will grow steadily, as many Canadian and international polar research and other projects continue well beyond the end of International Polar Year.

And if teachers and students needed any incentive to learn more about the Poles, they could not get any better!

Ice and snow have never been more fun!

Bringing polar science directly into the classroom is a key component of Youth Science Canada’s Polar Innovation Week project. Educators are encouraged to theme their lessons to incorporate polar science. To assist with this initiative, polar education resources, video, discussion topics, activities and lesson plans have been posted online! Check out the Educator Resources section to gain a little polar inspiration!

Not only will educators benefit from the Polar Innovation Week project, students across Canada have the polar opportunities of a lifetime at the click of a mouse…

With support from the Government of Canada’s International Polar Year Program in 2009, Youth Science Canada selected 13 Canadian youth and one teacher to join a polar excursion in celebration of International Polar Year.

The legacy of International Polar Year continues!  Youth Science Canada recently announced that it will select 7 fortunate young Canadians to go on Arctic excursions this summer!

We encourage you to explore the Polar Innovation Week website and to learn about the Arctic and Antarctic, these extraordinary, beautiful and vital regions of our planet.
